Uncovering China Stories: A Hong Kong Perspective

Living in a city with strong global and Chinese links, HongKongers throughout the years have played a major role in uncovering Chinese stories to a local and international audience. Following the implementation of the National Security Law and the shock delivered by the sudden Covid-19 outbreak in 2020, the space of communication and media has witnessed a structural shift. As the city eases into an uncharted territory, it is evident that both local and global audiences have an increasing need and thirst for stories in China. How are people in the space of communication and media responding to these sets of unique challenges?

This panel has invited communication professionals in Hong Kong and mainland China to discuss how the sociopolitical scenery and public health events have shaped the transformation of the Hong Kong media, how the professionals are responding to such changes, what challenges they face, and how can they navigate such a unique environment to tell the unique stories in Hong Kong and China with a global perspective. Also, the panel will draw upon their experience working in Mainland China to shed light on the future operation of Hong Kong writers and media workers, and how communication approaches can evolve amidst the current political climate. 

The panellists include Dr. Allan Au, professional consultant of School of Journalism and Communication at Chinese University of Hong Kong; Ms. Jovy Wong, Former Principle Reporter of China Desk, Hong Kong i-Cable News; and Ms Yi-ling Liu, a non-fiction writer & storyteller based in China. 

The panel is moderated by Emily Tsang, a news editor at the South China Morning Post, and a journalist fellow at Reuters’ Institute of the Study of Journalism at Oxford University.​
